HISTORY
St. James started at its earliest as a Sunday School in
1812. April of 1913, Rev. Joseph Peters was sent to
organize a congregation and then became its first
Pastor.
June 4th of that same year, a congregation was organized and a lot was rented at the northwest corner of 15th and Union Sts., a temporary site for the church.
It wasn't until 1914, when a groundbreaking service was held for its present site at 15th and Walnut Streets. in 1955, ground was broken for the new Christian Eduation Building and was dedicated on March 18, 1956.
In 1957, by ecumenical union of the Congregational Christian and the Evangelical & Reformed Churches, we became St. James United Church of Christ.
Through many changes in the world, and in the neighborhood, St. James UCC still stands proud and tall. Its congregation continues to be faithful to God's call to ministry, to worship and witness the good news of the Gospel.
